How To Pick The Right Eyebrow Color

Emily LaCroix

Finding the right eyebrow color can feel a bit like a game of Jenga. You’re just carefully toeing the line trying not to mess it all up. There are so many different products and color choices to choose from; it can certainly feel a little overwhelming.

It’s normal to feel slightly overwhelmed, but make-up is supposed to be fun and expressive. You should never have anxiety associated with doing your makeup routine; it should be something you look forward to, not something you dread.

Sometimes it’s easy to feel that way when something is overwhelming, and you just don’t know where to start.

Thankfully, TatBrow has made the entire process so painless! With a variety of products and shade ranges meeting the needs of anyone individual without overwhelming you or stressing you out.

Where to Begin

Several factors go into picking the right color for you. You have to think about your skin tone and hair color. If you’re a redhead, you probably won’t want to reach for a black eyebrow pencil. While we love a dramatic brow, some colors should be used with discretion.

First, think about your hair color and shade. Remember, everything about you is so unique! Your choice of brow color will be one-of-a-kind and specific to your wants and needs as far as desired look and preferences.

So think about what you’re looking for, what do you like? Do you prefer a fuller, more bold eyebrow look? Do you prefer more subtle and downplayed? Your personal preferences will play into what color and product you use when filling in your brows.

Remember, while there are “rules” regarding trends, at the end of the day, make your beauty decisions based on what you like. Whatever makes you feel most confident is what will look the best.

The Specifics

While personal preference plays into eyebrow color, there are a few general rules that you may find helpful when searching for your specific color.

The most important rule, and we’re sure you’ve probably heard it before, but we have to repeat for precautionary reasons; do not go too dark! Always aim for a color a few shades lighter than your hair color

Avoiding a color too dark will help maintain a more natural appearance to the brows.

A good piece of advice would be to ask a friend. Don’t be shy to simply ask if your brows are too dark; nine times out of ten, if they’re a good friend, they’ll tell you the truth.

The first step in the right direction is admitting you have a problem. In this case, the problem is that your brows might be too dark.

Blondes are a little confusing because there are so many variations of blonde hair. We’re working with Strawberry Blonde, Platinum, Golden. The list is kind of endless.

The being said, with each different type of blonde, there’s a different brow color that would be more flattering for each.

Now, I know we just said pick a shade or two lighter than you’re hair color. Blondes are kind of an exception to this rule. If you have platinum blonde hair and you followed this rule, you’d be filling your brows in with true white. We have a feeling this just wouldn’t be cute.

  • Strawberry Blondes: should probably stick to more taupe colors. Warmer blonde shades would work best.
  • Platinum Blondes: should aim for cooler, more ashy colors, as it tends to compliment their hair color best.
  • Traditional Blondes: should stick to warmer shades. Be careful not to go too dark because then you’ll run into trouble. But if you keep it warm and fun, all is peachy keen.

Pro tip: Find a celebrity with similar hair color to you and use them as a point of reference. What good is social media if you can’t use Insta models as a point of reference for your brow look?

Brunette Hair

Brunettes, like any other hair color, have their struggles in finding the right color. There are many elements that factor into your color decision.

Brunettes have a wide variety of skin tones and hair tones that they’re working with. However, it’s best to pay attention to the color of your hair and use that as a point of reference.

Try your best to follow the shade rule, as in, go for a few shades lighter than your hair color. Adjust accordingly depending on skin tone.

  • Medium-Dark Brown Hair: shoot for a light brown; you’ll definitely avoid a black eyebrow fill.
  • Dark, Deep Browns: aim to find a brown that’s very rich but still not too dark. Think chocolate ice cream shade. Delicious in more ways than one!

Black Hair

Generally, if you have black eyebrows, there isn’t a lot of “filling in” that needs to be done. We assume your brows are probably already prominent. However, that doesn’t mean they don’t need an extra boost or some TLC.

  • Black Hair: we recommend a deep brown. Sometimes, it’s not necessary to fill in with a pencil if your hair is very dark, in which case you may want to look into brow gel.

Grey Hair

Grey hair is so beautiful and unique, and it’s important to find a color that best compliments that.

  • Grey Hair: We recommend a true grey or ash black. Both colors are great for grey hair, depending on your skin tone and shade of grey.

Last in our list, but certainly not last in our hearts: redheads.

  • Redheads: The best course of action is to try to stick to a natural look. We recommend aiming for something more similar to your natural eyebrow shade rather than your hair.

Redhead’s eyebrows tend to be much lighter than their hair, so if you follow the hair rule, your eyebrows might still be a little too dark.

The shade of your natural eyebrow should really compliment your skin tone and hair. Opt for a light brown, or even taupe blonde, as that will likely compliment you best.

Products To Use

Depending on your desired outcome, your choice of product will vary. Products can be make or break and will really transform your look depending on your wants and needs, so make sure you’ve picked your preferred option.

You have a few choices to pick from: You have gels, pens, and pencils.

A tinted brow gel, such as TatBrow’s Ultra Defining Brow Gel, is perfect for those with already full, defined brows who just want a little extra definition, color, or volume. If you already have fuller brows but feel like they’re missing a little something, this is the product for you.

Plus, with a great color selection, there’s an option for everyone.

If you were blessed with VERY dark, full, and voluminous brows, we think the Ultra Hold Brow Gel is a great fit for you. It keeps your brows lying flat and prevents them from running off anywhere. Because it’s a clear product, all it does is entirely enhance your natural brow and keep them in place as you go off on your adventures. It doesn't add any definition or color.

The Microblade Pen and the Precision Pen are great for those of us who need a little extra help. They both provide great coverage, fill, and definition. Again, with a great color selection, you can’t go wrong with these products. There is something for everyone.

After adding a little extra oomph to your brows with the Precision Pen or the Microblade Pen, make sure to use the Ultra Hold Brow Gel, so your product stays in your eyebrows no matter what.
