Feathered Brows: Make the Most of the Big Makeup Trend

Emily LaCroix

What are feathered brows, and how do I pull them off? If you’ve been asking yourself this question, then you’ve come to the right place. There are tons of new makeup fads that come and go every year, but some get a bit more traction than others: feathered brows are one of those trends that nobody can stop talking about.

Feathered brows are all over social media: TikTok, Instagram, Facebook; you name it. We think rightfully so, too - feathered brows make your eyebrows look unique and fierce, major girl boss vibes if you’re rocking this trend.

What Are Feathered Brows

Makeup trends come and go; from the 90s stencil brow era to the bushy bold brows that take over the makeup world today, it’s essential to keep up with the trends. While bushy brows have stuck around for a substantial amount of time so far, this trend is great because it allows for more trends to grow within the bushy brow category itself - and that’s how feather brows were born.

Feathered brows are exactly as they sound - eyebrows are meant to look light and fluffy (like a feather). It’s supposed to follow your brows natural shape and color and are pretty lowkey for the most part. The craziest you’ll ever see is roughed-up brows pointing in all different directions.

However, the traditional version of this brow style is much more subtle - featuring feather brow hairs that just reach over your natural brow.

Feathered brows are great because they’re easy enough for anyone to learn, lowkey enough for anyone to feel comfortable rocking, but versatile enough to add some spice and excitement to any look that just needs a little more.

If you want to make the most of your big makeup trend, then you have to keep reading!

Why Are Feathered Brows so Popular

Ultimately feathered brows are a technique that rehabilitates over-tweezed brow trends from past decades. The look is to embrace fuller brow trends while remaining classy and unique to each person.

While feathered brows are trendy, each person lends their unique touch to their feathered brow look, making this brow trend like no other.

We believe that’s why they’ve picked up so much traction in recent months. Not to mention all the TikTokers and Instagramers that have hopped on and promoted this trend as well.

What You’ll Need

Now that you finally know what feathered brows are and why they’re so popular, it’s time to learn how to do them. Before you venture out on this new brow excursion, it’s important to figure out what supplies you’ll need.

  • The perfect eyebrow pencil that is precise enough to add volume and texture to your brows
  • Highlighter
  • Brow gel or defining gel
  • Brow brush

This trend is great because you most likely have all these products in your makeup bag anyways. Brows can be one of the most time-consuming parts of our makeup routine but trust us, with this trend, you’ll have everything down in no time.

How to Get Feathered Brows

Now, time for the fun stuff - let’s talk all things feathered brows. All it takes to get the perfect feathered brows is a four-step process that will probably take less than 15 minutes.

1. Step - Create Your Shape

The first thing you’ll want to do is create your desired brow shape. But, before we get started with that, remember, your skincare should be done, and the rest of your makeup should be applied before starting your brows.

Next up, start taming your brow hairs using a brow spoolie to brush and fluff your strands up. You’ll want feathered-like strokes going upward, which will lift and plump the hair, making them appear light and fluffy. Remember to brush along the arch - continue this process until you’ve reached your desired fluffiness.

2. Define and Fill

The best product you can use when recreating the feathered brows is a microblade pen. Thanks to the spaced-out ultra-thin felt tips, it makes for the perfect feathered brow. The key to feathered brows is starting small, lightly touching the areas you think need the most attention (usually the inner or outer brow).

Apply the product with soft, upward strokes. If you accidentally overdo it, just blend away and restart until you get it just right.

But, don’t forget the old saying, “Your eyebrows are sisters, not twins.” You don’t want to get too bent out of shape over getting them identical because the next thing you know, you’ll be in front of that mirror for 30 to 45 minutes.

3. Lock It In

You’ve just spent all this time and effort on achieving the perfect brows, so now you have to make sure they aren’t going anywhere! It’s time to lock them into place.

The best way to do this is with an ultra-holding brow gel. Especially since you are moving the hair follicles out of their natural positioning, the gel is crucial to ensure everything stays put and flawless.

You must use a clear brow gel. The more natural, the better; a tinted or colored gel would be far too flashy for what you’re going for here.

4. Conceal and Highlight

Your brows are all done up and looking super fly. They’re perfectly defined, but now it’s time to highlight all your hard work.

It’s best to use a lightweight concealer that’s only a few shades lighter than your brows - this will assure it all blends nicely. Using short, gentle strokes, apply the concealer and blend out until it’s perfectly blended into your skin.

Best Ways to Style Feathered Brows

There’s no question that feathered brows are a super versatile brow look, but there are ways to make the most out of this style - let’s talk about which makeup looks you should be pairing with this brow trend.

Mascara and Bold Brows

Feathered brows are so unique that you can get away with doing less in your makeup look. Your eyebrows should be the main attraction. A dash of mascara and a killer feathered brow look is a great combination to keep it casual while still looking put together and trendy.

Red Lips and Blush

Pair this look with a popping red lip and rosy pink blush. A cream blush will be your best option to keep everything dewy and natural.

Shimmery Shadow

A popular way to style feathered brows is with a shimmery shadow. Pick a gloss shadow that compliments your eyes and skin just right and apply that all over your lid.

Natural is in, but don’t be shy to add some blush and highlighter too, just be sure not to overdo it.

Concealer Over Foundation

Considering feathered brows are best paired with a more natural makeup look, you should consider swapping out that heavy foundation with a lightweight concealer.

Clear and glowing skin is the hottest trend right now - but it is a luxury that very few of us have. Have a conversation with your dermatologist or esthetician to help develop skin that is as healthy as it looks. A quick chat with your best girlfriend or makeup counter artist can help you plan a look that best serves your skin and the hottest trends. We recommend finishing off any look with some bomb highlighter and a cream-based natural color shadow.
