Contouring hit the beauty scene and gave the entire industry a major, exciting facelift. This new way to apply makeup gave beauty gurus and self-taught beginners across the world something exciting to practice.

This trend has picked up momentum in recent years and doesn’t show any signs of slowing down, so it’s important to know exactly what it’s all about. Plus, there’s a whole new world of contouring out there that has to do with just your brows. Luckily, here at TatBrow, we have you covered with all the answers you’re seeking.

We’ll provide you a bit of background contouring itself, teach you a bit regarding contoured eyebrows, and top off our chat with some suggestions on how you can get started yourself. We think you’re going to be just as excited as we are about this trend!

What Is Contouring?

You may have heard this word before in the context of beauty, but if you haven’t, let’s recap. Contouring is a very popular technique that is utilized to help sculpt and simultaneously add dimension to your face.

It involves using makeup that is either a little bit lighter or darker than your skin tone to add depth and emphasize certain areas of your face. You want to be able to create a shadow and light effect, and the best way to do this is by making sure that you're using makeup shades that are slightly different than your typical skin tone.

What are Contoured Eyebrows?

If you’ve seen any makeup video tutorials about contouring, then chances are that you have also seen contoured eyebrows. These videos have been circulating on Instagram a lot recently, and you might have noticed that people are suddenly getting a lot more experimental with their eyebrows. Part of this is due to the contoured eyebrows trend.

It’s going to take some work, but if you love makeup or just want to switch up your look every once in a while, the contouring craze is the perfect time to experiment with your very own look.

What Materials Do You Need to Contour?

Did you know that you don’t actually need a specific contour kit to get the glow that you’re seeing all over your Instagram explore page? Well, it’s true! It is completely possible to use what you have on hand to contour your skin.

If you want to do this, you should make sure that you have:

  • Two shades of foundation (or concealer works)
  • Highlighter (or a light, shimmery eyeshadow)
  • Eyebrow pens that you’re going to contour with - one lighter, one darker

It’s important to note the texture of the ingredients you’re using in your contouring. You should make sure that you’re using the same textures (that is, only using wet products with other wet products and powders with other powders). If you mix these products in the wrong order, you might find that the resulting mess is clumpy and overall messy. Wet or cream products should always go first, followed by powders.

How Do You Do It Yourself?

Who doesn’t want Instagram-worthy eyebrows? You can contour your eyebrows to create and sculpt a brow that looks multi-dimensional and beautifully angled.

When you are contouring your eyebrows, it doesn’t have to be a highly involved design. First, go in with your darker brow shade in the middle of your brow. Continue with this color towards the tail of your brow. Next, apply the lighter brow color towards the inside edge of your brows. Make sure you’re blending the colors together, so there isn’t a harsh line on your brow. You also may want to add a few precise lines towards the inside of your brow to make it look slightly more natural.

Then, using concealer, carve out the shape of your brow, both below and above. You want to make sure there’s a stark contrast between the color of the brow product and the concealer. Finish off the look with a dab of highlighter on your brow bone to really make the shape pop.

What makes this process special is that it can be meticulously planned and extremely in-depth, or it can simply be a chill, simple way to add a little more depth to your brows. Just like all makeup, your decisions are highly individualistic, so do what feels right to you. Additionally, you can learn how to contour in both a more dramatic and casual way, so you can flip between these two makeup styles depending on what you’re feeling comfortable with that day.

What TatBrow Products Can You Use?

Since you’re going for an intense, defined look, we recommend using the Microblade Pen for your darker shade, and the Micro Precision Pen for your lighter shade. Both of these products will give you that natural, hair-like finish that you’re looking for, while adding lots of pigment and staying put all day.

And that’s not all. First of all, both of these products are extremely affordable. They’re much less expensive (not to mention less painful) than microblading, but you’re going to get a similarly defined look. Plus, you’re not constrained to one look—if you want a natural brow one day and a contoured brow another, you’re free to play with your makeup.

In addition to this, our custom formula targets long-lasting wear (12 hours and more, specifically), is waterproof,  and also shapes/ grooms your eyebrows into their desired place.

Contoured Eyebrows: In Summary

Contoured eyebrows are all the rage currently, many thanks to the Instagram algorithms that are repeatedly showing videos of people working to contour their faces. Contouring essentially refers to the use of both lighter and darker shades of makeup to add dimension and character to the face.

When you contour your eyebrows, you’re going to be using different product shades to build these dimensional, angled brows that are simply beautiful.

You’ll likely already have most of the products that you would need to contour your skin or your eyebrows, so there’s probably no need to run around trying to find everything you need to complete this. Instead, just reach into your makeup bag, and we have a feeling you’ll find everything. That being said, keep in mind that you’re going to need a lot of brushes and that you should have those within reach.

Luckily, contouring your whole face or just your eyebrows is not nearly as hard as you’d expect. You can easily do it yourself, and once you start, you’ll have a fun, new skill that you can use to switch up your look.

If you’re a proud follower of TatBrow, you probably know that we work to develop only the best of the best eyebrow products. Therefore, including a TatBro eyebrow product as part of your contouring experience is a solid choice.

Makeup was created to empower you and make you feel like the best version of yourself. It’s important that every time you sit down to put it on or take it off, you feel like it’s helping give you that little boost of confidence to show the world all the amazing things that make you, you.

Ultimately, contouring is yet another beauty trend. Time will reveal if it sticks around for a while or if it passes by quickly. Nevertheless, now that you know how to do it, you should be proud of yourself and practice on your brows a few times to keep it fresh in your mind.
